Final Fantasy XIII outside Japan
By now the majority of you will officially have access to Final Fantasy 13 - lets see how you've all affected sales.
Firstly, for those who aren't up to date, Final Fantasy 13 was released in the United States, the Americas, the United Kingdom, the majority of Europe, Australia, New Zealand and several other countries on March 9, 2010. Motomu Toriyama's long-awaited high-definition RPG rail-rider stormed the shelves of gaming stores and the imaginations of rabid fanboys the world over in a several-day launch extravaganza, which entailed dozens of sponsored release parties, online events and a heavy advertising campaign.
Square have confirmed that in the first 24 hours in the United States alone, 290,000 PlayStation 3 copies of the game were sold, and a comparitively low 160,000 accompanying Xbox 360 varients. Final Fantasy 12's PlayStation 2 debut in 2006 however brought in 570,000 units in week 1; thus, at the current rate, Square expects to sell 15 to 20% more copies of Final Fantasy 13 by the end of the week. Which isn't much of a feat considering it is a cross-platform game.
In terms of shipping however, numbers are considerably more exponential - 3 million copies of the game have actually been shipped worldwide. As for how many of these are left by the end of the week remains to be seen, however going by Square's mathematical ingenuity displayed above, I think its safe to say more than half of those will still be sitting pretty in the hands of retailers.
Final Fantasy Insider will not be reviewing Final Fantasy 13 - if any of you would like to submit a fan-written review to be immortalised amongst our previous efforts, please feel free to email me via the 'Staff' page.
