Cid Highwind was a former employee for Shin-Ra in the company's Space
Program. Cid was the main pilot for the first rocket built by Shin-Ra. On
the day of launch, Shera, one of Shin-Ra's employees, was working on the
lower level of the rocket as it was preparing to launch. Cid, realizing
Shera's life was in danger, aborted the launch to save her life. However,
the rocket was now useless, so a town was constructed surrounding the
vessel, appropriately named Rocket Town.
“...They didn't even so much as look at space exploration. Money, moola,
dinero! My dream was just a financial number for them!" - Cid Highwind
Shin-Ra disassembled the Space Program soon after. Cloud and his companions
met Cid when they arrived at Rocket Town, coincidentally followed by
Shin-Ra. Cid assumed Shin-Ra wanted to restart the Space Program, but
instead wanted Cid's airship to search for Sephiroth. Cid, furious that they
did not restart the Space Program, decided to join Cloud in his quest
against Shin-Ra and to save the Planet from Sephiroth.
“Sit your ass down in that chair and drink your goddamn TEA!” - Cid
Cid is a good-hearted “Captain” who risked his long-awaited dream to save
his assistant, Shera. His knowledge of science had brought him to Rocket
Town in hopes of achieving the title of “first man in space,” and his faith
in his work extends as somewhat of a religion he holds dear to him.
Obscuring his once-in-a-lifetime goal, Shera is usually seen as the woman in
which he ventilates his anger on, but in actuality, he deeply cares for her
well-being; he eventually comes to a realization that Shera most-likely
saved his own life as well - not to mention, he develops a sincere respect
for her knowledge. He never allows himself to believe that Lady Luck had
ever failed him in his dream of becoming a great pilot.
Official Biography (From the official guide book): Cid is a tough talking,
warm-hearted old pilot who hasn't forgotten his dreams. There's no better
pilot who ever flew either on air or by sea. He believes someday he'll fly
to the ends of the universe. With his hand-made spear and knowledge of
machinery, he throws himself into any attack regardless of the danger. |
