He believed Seto, his father, was a coward that escaped when their race was fighting the Gi Tribe, and thus is initially ashamed of his father. He is later captured by Shin-Ra and used to attempt to mate with Aerith to preserve each of their 'species." When Cloud and his party arrive to rescue Aerith, Red XIII (a code name given to him by Shin-Ra) joins their group. Barret: “What's going to happen to Midgar? We can't let that happen!” Red XIII: “Forget Midgar, we've gotta worry about the Planet.” Red XIII can be viewed as the "elder" and battle-tested warrior of the group. He strictly follows a code of honor and respect, shown by the shame he felt for his father. With his age and experience comes a lot of advice and intelligence, greatly benefitting Cloud and his companions. Although appearing to be slightly isolated and cold, Red XIII is very compassionate and protectful of his beliefs, race and companions Spoiler [Highlight to read] When Cloud’s band made it to Cosmo Canyon, Red XIII’s real name was exposed: Nanaki. Nanaki was the last of his kind in Cosmo Canyon, because of a war that took place years before against the Tribe of Gi. Nanaki was lead to believe that his father, Seto, had fled from Cosmo Canyon, and he labeled Seto as a coward. An elder at the town of Cosmo Canyon, Bugenhagen, had revealed to Nanaki that his father was actually an honorable warrior who fought the Gi Tribe, and died in the process.This truth led Red XIII to continue on with Cloud’s party to become a warrior like his father Seto. Official Biography (From the official guide book): Just like his name says, he is an animal with fire-red fur. But under this fierce exterior is an intelligence surpassing that of any human's. His sharp claws and fangs make him good at close-range fighting, but other than that, not much else is known about him. It's not even certain "Red XIII" is his real name. A real enigma.
