Final Fantasy VII Walkthrough – Cosmo Canyon
Items: Black M-phone, Fairy Ring, Ether, X-Potion, Turbo Ether, Added Effect Materia, Gravity Materia (Demi). As you approach the area surrounding Cosmo Canyon the land will become brown and grassless. Head up the first slope you approach and follow the path, you will see the town protruding from a rock face, as you draw level with it the buggy will break down so you have to enter the canyon whether you like it or not. When you arrive the man stood at the entrance will greet you warmly, he will call Red XIII Nanaki and you'll learn that he was born here.
The man will also offer to fix the Buggy. The team will wander off, if you talk to Barret you'll learn some more about AVALANCHE's history
Now Red XIII will run off to meet his Grandfather, Budgenhagen, who is human, which is in itself a little strange but he also floats to top it off, but eh well. Follow him up the stairs on the far left of the canyon, through the first door there will be an item shop and a save point, head out of this area by going up the stairs and through the exit in the bottom left hand corner of the screen (there are different passages and it can be confusing) and up the next set of stairs through the door, climb the ladder here and you will be near the observatory, go inside and you'll see Red XIII with Budgenhagen who will tell you to make a team of three to watch his demonstration. Budgenhagen will take the three of you up into the observatory and explain about the life stream, how it makes Mako energy and how the Shinra are harming the planet by doing this.
He says the Earth will die completely if there isn't any life stream. You'll go back down and if you talk to him he'll take you to the campfire in town. Here talk to everyone individually leaving Red XIII until last. When you talk to him he'll tell you about his family and how his father abandoned him and his mother, now you'll need to make a party of three, Red XIII is a compulsory member, and go to the big metal door where Budgenhagen is and he'll open the door to the GI cave.
It is easy to get lost in here but you shouldn't have trouble as it should be fairly easy to get to the starting point, the battles can be tougher if you've been running away from previous fights, but in total it isn't very long. Make sure you've stocked up on Phoenix downs though as the enemies here use death sentence (equip enemy skill materia to learn this). When you get to the area after the first the path is quiet linear, watch out for the oil like substance on the path as you slip uncontrollably on this, it isn't the end of the world though as you'll be able to get back.
In the third area there is an Added Effect Materia on the bottom left. Here is where each path leads,
First Tunnel - goes to the fifth tunnel Second Tunnel - leads to a fight with Stingers Third Tunnel - Dead end Fourth Tunnel - leads to a fight with Stingers, an item Fifth Tunnel - connects with first tunnel
The simple route is through the second tunnel but the fourth is worth a look for the item. Before you go into the last area equip fire rings and other fire resisting accessories along with your summon materia, namely Shiva. As you Approach the face in the wall at the end of the cave Budgenhagen will speak and then it will come alive, now you will have to fight the GI Boss.
Boss: Gi Nattak This one uses fire attacks and sometimes uses Mp/Hp absorbing moves. Use Ice magic and Shiva. If you have your fire resistance equipped he should be easy enough to defeat, use your limits when you get them and at the end you'll receive Aeris's Wizer Staff and a Phoenix down.
Once Gi Nattak is defeated, Budgenhagen will take you through the passage and will tell Red XIII about how when the GI attacked Reds father and mother spoke to Budgenhagen about sealing the back door into Cosmo Canyon permanently with Seto still inside it, defending the Canyon. Red XIII realises that his father is a hero who saved the Canyon.
After a good old howling session Budgenhagen asks Cloud to take Red XIII with him. Now you will need to leave the Canyon (at the exit Red XIII will run and join you) and head over to Nibleheim. Get into the buggy head towards the grey mountains.
