Chrono Trigger Review

A tale of adventure, excitement, and Teeth Removal One sunny summer day, I went to the dentist, and yes this is how my chrono trigger saga began. I was flipping through a magazine at the dentists, and i saw and ad for final fantasy chronicles. Having the nice mom I do, we went out and bought it after I was finished having my teeth pulled. not being able to talk to anyone because my mouth was so numb, I decided to go and try out chrono trigger. boy was I glad I went to the dentist that day.

Chrono Trigger is a game about havinng one thing-fun, and im pretty sure thats what everyone who has played this game has had.

Graphics: 9/10
Some people are probably saying 9/10?! but its got such old graphics. Thats exactly my point. because this game has such old graphics they are amazing for their time. I really liked all the little facial expressions that they had throughout the game, how their eyes popped out when they got shocked even made me laugh a couple times. I also really liked how instead of having fully 3d fmv's, they put in some super crisp and super smooth animations which in my opinion, fit the game alot better than 3d fmv's would've. There were no glitches or slowdown in this game which was a big help, because in most square games, I tend to get a bit of slowdown or glitchyness, which invokes me into a rage.

Characters: 10/10
Ahhh the characters. I absolutely LOVED the characters in this game. How they all had they're own personal goals-yet they kept working together until they all had one ultimate goal-to save the world. One little thing that might annoy some people is the fact that Crono doesnt talk, but I think it adds to the story. Cronos the strong silent type guy, but he shows in his own ways that when his friends are in trouble hes there to save help them.

Music: 8/10
The music in this game was so-so. I liked some of the music in it [millenium festival], but I also didint like some of the music [battle music]. Although I didnt like some of the music, doesnt mean that it didnt fit in with the game. Which is why it still got a good score. Each composition of music each had was specifically made for that pat in the game. As in 2300 a.d., how it had sort of drab and saddening music because everything was run down it was after Lavos had come. But in 600 a.d the music is set for exploration, which is what I did in 600 a.d. anyways. All the SFX went nicely with this game too. All the attack sounds were on the nose. For instance how Cronos katana sounded different then Frogs bigger swords. My favorite part about the sound effects was Lucas guns. They sounded so quirky and inventive, A nice little per that made me happy every time I heard it.

Controls: 10/10
Simple and fast, basically sums up the controls in CT. You press X-you attack, simple as that. There wasnt any 'if you hold X for 2 seconds you will get a slightly higher attack then if you hold it for 1.5 seconds.' there wasnt any of that crap, which I hate. The fact that there wasnt really a controllable camera in this game, is a good thing I think. Because yo cant control the camera, means that there wont be any glitches or anything, which is what alot of people complain aboot. Movement was very smooth, none of that pressing left and moving down or anything, which was a big help. Because the controls were so smooth and fast it was very easy to scroll through battle menus and equipment screens, which ill talk aboot next.

User Interface/Battle System: 10/10
A big question when I was playing Chrono Chross was why didnt they keep the tech system in the game like they had in Chrono Trigger? I thought that the tech system was one of the most innovative and fun battle systems I have ever played. It was very simple and fun, basically a magic system except you can combine two or three characters Tech magic together to make a stronger attack. It was very fun in this gae just to get everyones techs and then to use them in battle to see what they look like. The menu interface was a teensy bit of a challenge at the start to understand, but once you got used to it it was very easy and fast. Basic menu with several different choices. It was a nice little bit that you could change the style of your interface it was just a cool thing to put in. Equipping and un-equipping items were very quick thanks to the games easy controls. The names of the items, were a bit more clever in some aspects then the item names in Final Fantasy. Tonics sound way more interesting than potions.

Replayiblity: 10/10
I shouldve gaven this category an 11/10, but it wouldnt be fair to all the other jealous categories. The replayibility in this game is bloody amazing. With 14 endings and 7 sidequests, you can play this game over and over and get a different ending every time. Not only that the sidequests that you complete will alter the ending you get [saving lucas mom or not alters the ending]. Theres not really much to say for the replayibility of this game other than its really damn good. I've played the game several times and have liked every ending ive gotten. Getting the different endings though is all about choices. Every time another character asks you a question, it actually matters what you answer. So if youre nice to someone, they might help you out later on, but if youre mean to them they might come back and haunt you or something spooky like that.

Final Words
I got alot of fun out of Chrono Trigger. I really did. But it was a bit strenuis at some points in the game, which stressed me out and made me a bit frustrated. It was mostly fun though, travelling back and forth through time in Assface [what I named my Epoch] anyways. All the jolly happpy towns that you could travel to and have a lot of fun, at the start of the game for instance at the millenium festival, I'd say I spent the better part of three hours there, just battling the robot. With all the minigames to play in most places were very nice addition to keep the game flowing in tough spots. I couldnt talk till the next day because the dentist numbed my mouth up good, but not talking for that one day was one of themost interesting and fun days ive had of staying indoors in the summer time. Thank you Squaresoft. Thank you

*Score is actually calculated, its not just what I personally thought of the game overall.
